01

Discharge Upgrade Consulting

"Your discharge doesn't have to define your future."

A less-than-honorable discharge can cost a veteran hundreds of thousands in lost benefits — but many don't know it can be changed. We guide you through the DRB and BCMR process with legal precision your case deserves.

  • DD-214 and records review with eligibility assessment
  • DRB or BCMR application preparation and drafting
  • Personal statement and legal argument construction
  • Evidence gathering and submission support
For: Veterans with OTH, general, or uncharacterized discharges seeking to restore their record and unlock full VA benefits.
03

Life After Service Planning

"Your training prepared you for everything. We'll show you how to use it."

Leaving the military is one of the most significant transitions a person can make. The benefits available — healthcare, home loans, education — represent enormous lifetime value most veterans never fully access.

  • VA healthcare enrollment and TRICARE transition
  • VA Home Loan benefit strategy and walkthrough
  • GI Bill and education benefits maximization
  • Full benefits map — every entitlement you have
For: Active duty preparing to separate, recently discharged veterans, and anyone who left without a full benefits access plan.

Transparent Pricing.
No Surprises.

Every package is designed to deliver maximum value relative to the lifetime benefits you stand to gain.

Built by a Veteran.
Backed by the Law.

The Veterans Transition Institute was founded on a simple belief: every veteran deserves to fully access the benefits they earned through their service — and most don't, because the system is designed for those who know how to navigate it.

Ferdinand Dady Nlate is a U.S. Navy veteran, disabled veteran, and legal professional with a Juris Doctor degree and an LLM in Legal Studies from UConn School of Law. He has navigated the VA system personally and understands the bureaucratic maze veterans face — from the inside.

The Veterans Transition Institute is not a government agency. It is not a volunteer organization. It is a professional advisory firm built on legal precision, military credibility, and a genuine commitment to ensuring that every veteran receives what they earned through their service to this nation.

Based in Georgia and serving veterans nationwide via remote consultations, The Veterans Transition Institute brings a rare combination of legal expertise and lived military experience to every case.

Questions Veterans Ask Us Most.

What is a discharge upgrade and who qualifies?
A discharge upgrade changes the characterization of your military discharge — from Other Than Honorable (OTH), General, or Uncharacterized to Honorable. Veterans may qualify if their discharge was influenced by mental health conditions (including PTSD or MST), if their conduct has been exemplary since service, or if there were procedural errors in their discharge process. The Discharge Review Board (DRB) and Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR) are the two bodies that handle these requests. Many veterans are surprised to learn they are eligible — a free consultation with us will tell you exactly where you stand.
Can you file VA disability claims on my behalf?
Currently, The Veterans Transition Institute provides VA disability benefits guidance as education and coaching — not direct claims representation. This means we help you understand what to claim, how to document your conditions, and how to navigate the VA system. We are actively pursuing VA accreditation, which will allow us to provide full claims representation and charge for that service. If you need direct representation now, we can refer you to a VA-accredited attorney in our network.
How long does a discharge upgrade take?
The timeline varies depending on the board and complexity of your case. DRB cases typically take 12 to 18 months from application to decision. BCMR cases can take 18 months to several years. Our job is to submit the strongest possible application from day one — a well-built case is far less likely to require multiple rounds of appeals, saving you both time and money.
Do you only serve Georgia veterans?
No — we are based in Georgia but serve veterans nationwide. All consultations and services are available remotely via video call and phone. We have worked with veterans across the United States and our services are not limited by geography.
What makes you different from free VSO services?
Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) like the DAV and American Legion provide valuable free assistance, and we encourage veterans to use them. However, VSO representatives are volunteers — they are not lawyers. Our founder holds a J.D. and an LLM in Legal Studies and brings a level of legal rigor to your case that most advocates cannot offer. For complex discharge upgrades and cases involving significant benefit value, the quality of your application matters enormously. We build cases, not just paperwork.
What does a free consultation include?
Your free 30-minute consultation includes a review of your situation, an assessment of which services apply to your case, and a frank discussion of what's possible and what it would cost. There is no obligation to proceed and no pressure to purchase. Our goal is to give you the information you need to make the best decision for yourself.
